Phaco Masters: Richard Mackool

In 1980, Dr. Richard Mackool conceived the first automated instrument capable of both phacoemulsification and vitrectomy. He also designed the first phaco tips to eliminate leakage from the incision and also flared phaco tips, which were a milestone in needle design. He helped design and implanted the first acrylic ocular lenses in the United States. In this video, Dr. Mackool performs phaco using topical anesthesia on an eye with a previous pars plana vitrectomy for a macular hole.
